Common Name: Crypt Purpurea, Purple Water Trumpet

Crypt Purpurea is a rarer crypt, not commonly seen in the aquarium hobby. Originating from the sandy river edges of West Malaysia, Crypt Purpurea does well being grown submerged in an aquarium or emersed in humid terrariums. Leaves from one plant may differ when compared to others due to the plant adapting to life in different environments. Generally, Crypt Purpurea has leaves that are around 10cm long, wider, and darker veined when compared to other Crypts, making Crypt Purpurea a good choice as a foreground plant.

Similar to other Crypts, Crypt Purpurea depend heavily on their roots to absorb nutrients, meaning a high quality aquarium substrate should be used. We have grown Crypt Purpurea successfully using Ultum Nature System Controsoil. Although high light, CO2, and dosing will definitely benefit the growth of the plant, it is not required. It is recommended that crypts are not moved around often as this may cause the Crypt to melt.

Crypts propagate by splitting the rhizome or cutting off new growth and replanting

Notes:

  • Tissue culture plants are grown in vitro from a state of the art laboratory specialized in propagating aquatic plants. They provide the best option for those who want to ensure that absolutely zero unwanted pests are introduced into the aquarium.
  • Remove tissue culture gel before planting. Simply wash the gel away or soak the plant in water and squeeze the gel off with your fingers.
  • Cryptocoryne prefer not to be moved once planted. If possible, do not move them!
  • Do not make drastic changes to the aquarium. Unstable parameters will result in melt and rotting of the aquarium plant.

  • CO2 injection and quality aquarium soil will yield better growth.
