Mopani Wood is the heavyweight champion of the aquarium hardscape world. This African hardwood is famous for its extreme density and rugged, two-toned appearance. If you are looking for a piece that feels like a solid piece of history, Mopani is the choice. Its resistance to rot makes it one of the most durable aquarium driftwood available, ensuring your layout stays intact for years to come.
Product Features and Benefits
- Superior Weight: Unlike almost any other driftwood, Mopani is so dense that it typically sinks immediately. This makes it a go-to for hobbyists who want to skip the "weighing it down" phase and get straight to aquascaping.
- Two-Toned Aesthetic: Mopani has a unique, contrasting color palette with light tan highlights and deep chocolate-brown shadows. Its smooth areas paired with gnarled, "knotty" textures add instant depth to a driftwood aquarium.
- Rot-Resistant: Because it is exceptionally hard, Mopani breaks down much more slowly than other woods. It provides a long-lasting foundation for a planted aquarium hardscape, especially when used as a base for mosses and ferns.
- Reptile & Terrarium Safe: Its durability and striking look make it just as popular for reptile enclosures and terrariums, providing a sturdy, non-rot surface for climbing and basking.

Preparation and Care
A little extra prep goes a long way in maintaining its stunning appearance.
- Rinse: Thoroughly rinse the piece to remove any dust or debris from transit.
- The Tannin Powerhouse: Mopani is very rich in natural tannins. While these are beneficial for the health of your fish and help naturally lower pH, they will produce a dark "tea-colored" tint. If you prefer crystal-clear water, we strongly recommend boiling the wood for 1–2 hours or soaking it in a bucket for several days before use. You can also reduce this effect through consistent water changes or through the addition of Aquario Neo Carbon Bag
Important note:
We recommend rinsing wood thoroughly before adding it to an established aquarium. If you prefer, you may also boil the wood for at least 1–2 hours to help release tannins.
