Plant Profile

If you want to fern-ish your aquascape with something with a little more texture, this pre-built plant combo is the way to go. Instead of the standard smooth leaves of regular Java Fern, the Windelov version is famous for its distinct, finely branched leaf tips that look like underwater lace. We have paired this distinctive plant with a lush, velvety coat of classic Christmas Moss, all pre-attached to a natural piece of driftwood. Because both of these low-light legends are famously bulletproof, you can skip the sticky superglue drama!

Key Features & Benefits

  • Pre-attached to natural wood to bypass the planting stage and anchor an instant two-in-one focal point.
  • Combines feathery, pine-like moss fronds with unique, lacy Windelov fern tips for detailed visual contrast.
  • Natural driftwood releases beneficial tannins that help soften water and create a natural tropical habitat.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Position the driftwood piece directly onto your substrate or nestle it securely into your hardscape layout, keeping the thick green Java Fern rhizome completely exposed to the water column to prevent rot.
  • Maintain a stable aquarium environment and avoid sudden, drastic changes to your water parameters to keep both plants looking vibrant and healthy.
  • Give the moss an occasional light haircut with sharp aquascaping shears to keep its shape neat, compact, and perfectly balanced.
  • Propagate by cutting the Java Fern rhizome or snipping off small clumps of thriving moss to attach elsewhere in your tank.
  • Add CO2 injection if you want to accelerate growth and unlock the most intense, eye-popping green coloration possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I keep the Christmas Moss and Windelov Java Fern from turning brown or yellow?

Both plants prefer clean, moving water and cooler temperatures (under 78°F). Browning in moss usually occurs when organic debris gets trapped inside the fronds, while Java Fern browning can result from burying its rhizome in substrate or sudden water parameter swings. Keep the rhizome exposed and gently siphon debris during water changes.

2. What should I do if the driftwood piece tries to float when placed in the tank?

Because the underlying hardscape is real natural wood, it may retain slight buoyancy initially. If it tries to lift, simply weigh the piece down with a clean rock or tuck it securely into surrounding hardscape for a few days until it becomes completely waterlogged.

3. How do I stop moss trimmings from spreading everywhere during maintenance?

Always turn off your filter pumps and powerheads before trimming moss. Use sharp curved shears to make clean cuts, and immediately scoop or siphon out floating cuttings so they don't take root in unwanted areas of your aquarium.

Q&A

Can I soak the drift wood with the Christmas moss and Java fern for a few days before placing it in my aquarium I don't use carbon in my fx4 I was told that it removes nessasary nutrients from the water that the plants need is that true
Hi Ken, It may be beneficial to soak and quarantine your Christmas Moss and Java Fern for a few days before adding it to your tank. While it is true that carbon will remove some of the nutrients from your water column, as long as you are not running too much carbon, I wouldn't worry about stripping my water completely. Thank you, Team Buce Plant

How big are these driftwood pieces? Before I order, I want to know if they will fit. I was also looking at the drift with java ferns (no moss), because they come in 3 sizes. I have a 4 way divided 20g Aqueon and wanted to know if it would fit. Already have a sword and crypts from you guys in the tank.
Hi Nina, Thank you for reaching out to us. Since each piece of wood is unique, it is difficult to say an exact size. The pieces range from 3.5-5 inches long. Best regards, Buceplant Team
How big is this? Just rough size of the pieces of driftwood.
Hi Nicole, Thank you for reaching out. The driftwood pieces are roughly 5in long by 2 inches wide. Each piece will differ, so it is difficult to give an exact size. Feel free to contact us at support@buceplant.com for any questions or concerns. We are happy to help! Best regards, Buceplant Team
