Plant Profile

Alternanthera Reineckii 'Mini', widely known in the hobby as AR Mini, is a compact dwarf cultivar of the iconic South American stem plant. Famous for its intense, ruby-to-magenta red foliage and low-growing, bushy structure, AR Mini is a staple focal point in both Dutch-style aquascapes and nature aquariums. Reaching a manageable height of just 3 to 4 inches, its compact size allows it to be used flexibly as a bold red foreground carpet, a dense midground transition, or a colorful accent in nano aquariums.

*Form Notice: Photos display this plant in both its emersed (above-water) and submerged forms. Depending on nursery availability and seasonality, you may receive this plant in either form. Learn more about what to expect by reading our guide on Emersed vs. Submerged-Grown Aquatic Plants.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Crimson and magenta red foliage adds color contrast to foreground, midground, or nano tank layouts.
  • Compact growth forms dense, bushy red carpets and low hedges, needing less frequent height pruning.
  • Dense leaf structure gives cover and shelter for dwarf shrimp and timid fish species.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Remove lead weight and remove cotton wrap (or foam) surrounding the base, then strip lower foliage so bare stems anchor cleanly into soil without rotting.
  • Use fine-tip pinsettes to push individual stems 1 to 2 inches into substrate, spacing them slightly apart so light reaches lower leaves and encourages lateral growth.
  • Provide medium-to-high lighting. Regular dosing of liquid fertilizers like UNS Plant Food (2–3 times per week) and pressurized CO2 injection are highly recommended to yield maximum crimson coloration and prevent stunted growth. See our guide to growing red aquarium plants.
  • Maintain stable water parameters and avoid sudden environmental shifts to prevent leaf melt or stem rotting.
  • Trim stem tops or side shoots with curved scissors once stems reach the desired height, and replant trimmings directly into substrate to propagate and thicken the carpet. Read our trimming & propagation guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are the lower leaves falling off my stem plants?

Lower leaf loss (leggy stems) usually occurs when lighting cannot reach the bottom of the plant due to overcrowding or shading from larger plants. Spacing individual stems slightly apart during initial planting and maintaining strong light penetration will keep lower leaves healthy.

2. How do I keep AR Mini growing low and bright red?

Providing strong lighting, pressurized CO2, a nutrient-dense substrate, and regular micronutrient dosing with liquid iron ensures intense red foliage while encouraging low, horizontal branching rather than vertical stretching.

3. How do I transition Alternanthera Reineckii 'Mini' from emersed to submerged growth?

When transitioning from emersed to submerged growth, plant bare stems securely into rich substrate under medium-to-high lighting and keep water parameters stable. As new growth adapts, the plant will shed its duller emersed leaves and sprout vivid magenta-red underwater foliage. Once new shoots develop, trim away old lower growth to encourage dense carpet branching.

Q&A

Is it possible to plant this onto a piece of hardscape, such as spider wood?
Hi Louis, Thank you for reaching out! Although Alternanthera Reineckii Mini will grow attached to hardscape, it will not thrive and grow to its fullest potential. AR mini does best planted in a nutrient rich substrate, such as UNS ControSoil. Let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns. We are happy to help! Best Regards, Team Buceplant
