Plant Profile

Cryptocoryne 'Silver Queen' has a way of making a foreground feel intentional, like every leaf was placed just so. This rare crown jewel comes from the specialized river basins of Borneo, and it's easy to see why collectors seek it out: it has pointed oval leaves with a gentle silver wavy margin and dark green foliage dotted with delicate pink or bronze spotting. It's a touch more demanding when submerged than standard crypts, preferring slightly alkaline water (pH above 7.0) to really take off, but the payoff in color makes every bit of extra care worthwhile.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Foliage adorned with an elegant wavy margin and silver sheen creates a unique look.
  • Can be grown emersed in high-humidity paludarium setups where it produces an extraordinary flower with a long pink spathe.
  • An exceptional collector's plant that introduces dark, sophisticated contrast to foreground and midground zones.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Prep the plant by removing it from the pot and clearing all rockwool from the roots.
  • Use fine-tip pinsettes to push roots deep into quality aquarium soil, as Crypt species are heavy root feeders.
  • Insert root tab fertilizers if using an inert substrate like sand or gravel to supply essential subterranean nutrients.
  • Maintain a neutral-to-slightly-alkaline pH (7.0+) and provide moderate to high lighting with pressurized CO2 to encourage faster, healthier submersed foliage.
  • Choose a permanent spot from day one; moving an established plant will likely trigger leaf loss.
  • Cryptocoryne species can be grown emersed in high-humidity setups or submerged in aquariums. Propagate by splitting the rhizome or replanting new growth shoots.
  • Don't discard the plant if leaves dissolve early on; see our guide to managing Cryptocoryne melt to help your plant recover smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why is Cryptocoryne Silver Queen considered more difficult to keep?

Unlike widely available crypts, Silver Queen is significantly more demanding when grown fully submersed. It requires moderate to high lighting, pressurized CO2, and stable water chemistry to establish effectively. Additionally, it shows a distinct preference for neutral to slightly alkaline water (pH above 7.0) to achieve its best growth rate and coloration.

2. How do I help my Cryptocoryne Silver Queen recover if it melts?

Crypt melt is a standard reaction when shifting water conditions cause old leaves to dissolve so the plant can rebuild foliage adapted to your aquarium. Trim away rotting tissue, keep your water parameters stable, and do not disturb the subterranean root system. For complete recovery steps, check out our guide to managing Cryptocoryne melt.

3. Do I need root tabs if I already use liquid fertilizers for my Cryptocoryne?

Yes. Because Cryptocoryne plants absorb the vast majority of their nutrients through their roots rather than their leaves, providing nutrient-rich aquasoil or root tabs inside sand or gravel is far more effective than relying on water column liquid fertilizers alone.

silver queen

"I gave silver queen a 4 star because it wasn't in the best shape. Had little to no root growth. For being as rare as it is I'm happy with my purchase. Hopefully it makes the transition to my tank peramiters, And grows out"

Sensitive plants

"Excited to see this crypt available but one of the trickier ones to ship successfully. Ordered two to increase my odds but was only able to recover one (right; FSS, RO/DI and high humidity). Unfortunately, McStubby (left) melted away and finally gave up the ghost today despite excellent packaging and rapid shipping. Full kudos to TeamBuce for getting such a delicate plant to me alive!"

"It came mostly healthy but part of the ribosome had started to melt and I thought I got rid of the bad spot but when I looked back a week latter the whole ribosome was mush and only a few leaves remained."

When I started aquariums again

"When I started aquariums again I was blown away to find out plants, are a large part of the hobby now. Started off with cheap plants and then ran across and add for buce.com My experience has changed so much. These plants are beautiful and amazingly colorful. I've never once been disappointed by buce.com. Even with my more rare expensive purchases I've never once been in happy. I give them a 4 star because it seems they rush to get these plants on the market. I've received a few with little to no root growth. But none of my plants have ever died, and allways pulled thru. If they were given a little more growth time before selling I'd have no complaints I've never once had alge on a plant when it arrived. And I will continue to do business with buce.com for that reason. I've received amazing portions of everything I have ordered. I love buce.com there allways up to date on all things buce, and buce related"
