Homalomena sp. ‘Broad Sekadau South’ is a rare, low-tech aquarium plant belonging to the same family as Bucephalandra and featuring uniquely broad, structural foliage. This variety is highly sought after for its unique appearance and adaptability, performing exceptionally well in low to moderate lighting environments. Highly versatile, it can be grown submerged or emersed, usually attached to hardscape such as driftwood or rocks rather than being buried in traditional aquarium substrate. It's a great pick for the midground or background of freshwater aquascapes, where its larger profile provides a lush, broad presence.
Key Features & Notes
- As a close relative of Bucephalandra, this Homalomena variant offers a similar ease of care but with a much bolder, more substantial leaf presence.
- Reaching heights of 4" or more, it is an excellent tool for filling vertical space and creating "shrub-like" details among rocks and wood.
- Like Anubias, it is a slow grower that thrives in shaded areas. Excessive light should be avoided to prevent algae from forming on its broad leaf surfaces.
- It is a fantastic candidate for high-humidity ripariums, paludariums, and terrariums, where it can be grown emersed as a striking marginal plant.
Care Tips & Preparation
- As an Aridarum-type epiphytic plant it should be attached to rocks or driftwood. Never bury the rhizome in substrate, as this will cause the plant to rot and melt.
