Plant Profile

Instead of picking between standard green and deep red, Nesaea Pedicellata Golden offers a rare third option: gold! Hailing from West Africa, this striking aquatic stem plant pairs greenish-gold leaves with bold, pinkish-red stems for a look you just don't see every day. As one of the very few golden-colored species available in the aquascaping hobby, it provides an exceptional pop of color and architectural contrast in midground or background placements. Hardy and versatile, this gem flourishes in both submerged aquariums and emersed setups, developing rich, warm tones under moderate-to-high lighting.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Rare greenish-gold leaves contrasting against bright pinkish-red stems introduce a unique color palette to planted tanks.
  • Hardy stem plant that easily forms thick, bushy midground clusters when pruned routinely.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Remove lead weight and cotton wrap (or foam) surrounding the base, then strip the lower inch of foliage so bare stems anchor cleanly into soil without rotting. *Nesaea stems can be fragile, so handle with care during preparation.
  • Use fine-tip pinsettes to push individual stems 1 to 2 inches into soil, spacing them slightly apart so light reaches lower leaves.
  • Provide moderate-to-high lighting. Adding pressurized CO2 and a consistent fertilizer regimen enhances growth speed and yields maximum golden-yellow coloration.
  • Maintain stable water parameters and cooler-to-moderate water temperatures (70–78°F) for ideal leaf form and stem development.
  • Trim stem tops with straight scissors once they reach the desired height to encourage dense side-branching. Read our trimming & propagation guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are the lower leaves falling off my stem plants?

Lower leaf loss (leggy stems) usually occurs when lighting cannot reach the bottom of the plant due to overcrowding or shading from larger plants. Spacing individual stems slightly apart during initial planting and maintaining strong light penetration will keep lower leaves healthy.

2. How do I get my Nesaea Pedicellata Golden to look as yellow and golden as possible?

While CO2 is not strictly required, providing moderate-to-high light intensity, iron supplementation, and a nutrient-rich aquarium substrate is essential for bringing out bright golden-yellow leaf tones and deep pink stems.

3. My stem plants arrived with round green leaves, but the new growth looks totally different. Is this normal?

Yes! Many aquatic stem plants are cultivated emersed (above water) at plant nurseries, producing rounder, thicker green leaves. Once submerged in your aquarium, the plant will transition into its true aquatic form, sprouting delicate, colorful submerged foliage.

Just a Touch Up

"I have a new aquarium 6 months new. Needed to do a little fill in. Nesaea is hard to find and it finally became available. Beautiful yellow plant for contrast. Need good lighting and CO2. Received 12 nice stems from Buce and used the lead band as an anchor. Cut the band into smaller strips. Ordered 7:00AM on a Thursday and got it Friday at 2:30PM per 2 Day FedEx. If you are in SoCal, this is the way to go. Cost: $12.00 to ship, but worth it to me. The cost of the banded plant $7.99. Actually, a very fair price."

Delicate plant, handle with care

"I received six stems in the lead bunch. This is a very delicate plant that doesn't seem to like being handled and transported. My stems were about 5 inches long with some leaf damage and loss from transit and some dark spotting on the stems. Get them removed from the lead bunch as soon as possible. I gently separated them into two three-stem groupings and placed them in the substrate about an inch deep. Within 36 hours, I had new growth on four stems. Within 60 hours, I had 1/2 inch new growth on five stems."

Nesaea Golden

"After one week every stem but one is doing well. I believe this is a difficult plant to transition to submerged growth and if it is already submerged, it isn't a plant that does well shipping for several days. I would add it to the orders you are paying to get shipped quicker. Sorry for the bad photo. It's the golden plant at the bottom. This was taken only 5or6 days after planting."

"Arrived with everyone of the stems with root rot. I trimmed the rot away and now just waiting to see if any survive. I've had to remove about half because they were to far gone."

Beautiful golden color.

"A couple of stems were broken, but very much salvageable. I’m sure that occurred during shipping. Overall, high quality and all survived and are now converting to submerged growth."
