Plant Profile
Common Name: Bucephalandra Mini Coin
Buce ‘Mini Coin’ is a compact, miniature variation within the Bucephalandra family. It features remarkably tiny leaves displaying an array of deep red, purple, and blue hues. Despite its small size, it's highly prized for its pronounced iridescent coloration, provided it receives appropriate care and is placed under aquarium LED lighting. This adaptable epiphyte thrives submerged or emersed and prefers to be mounted on driftwood or rock rather than buried in substrate. Mini Coin is an excellent choice for nano tanks, possibly ranking as the smallest among known Bucephalandra in the aquarium hobby.
Key Features & Notes
- Mini Coin is the gold standard for adding massive scale and high-detail texture to even the smallest aquascapes due to its miniature size.
- Unlike taller variants, Mini Coin stays low and tight to the hardscape, making it ideal for moss-like applications on rocks and wood or to create a carpeting effect.
- This is one of the most durable species in the hobby and thrives in shaded areas. It is an ideal choice for planted tanks where other plants might struggle.
- It is perfectly at home fully submerged in an aquarium or emersed in high-humidity terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums.
Care Tips & Preparation
- Bucephalandra is an epiphytic plant that should be attached to rocks or driftwood. Never bury the rhizome in substrate, as this will cause the plant to rot and melt.
- Avoid making drastic changes to your water parameters or lighting. Unstable conditions are the primary cause of leaf melt in new specimens.
- While this plant is hardy and low-maintenance, CO2 injection will yield much faster growth. We recommend researching your specific water chemistry to ensure your plant thrives.
- Final size and coloration depend entirely on your specific aquarium conditions. Please note that photos are a representation, and individual plants may vary.
- Please research appropriately to ensure your plant thrives.

Q&A
- Is this a tank-raised plant or collected from the wild?

- Hi, I plan to attach the mini coin to my bonsai in my fish tank. What are the planting requirements? Does it require plant food? Do I just plant the roots in the gravel and then wrap around the base of the tree? Thanks
- Hi Chris, Thank you for reaching out to us! Buce Mini Coin will grow grew attached to the bonsai tree. You can either tie the buce onto the wood or glue them by the roots onto the wood. Liquid fertilizer and moderate lighting is recommended. Too much light may promote growth of algae on the leaves. The roots can be left growing in the water column.
