Plant Profile

Salvinia Cucullata is a less common floating plant with small, nickel-sized leaves and a signature trick: unique pouch-like, hooded folds that trap air pockets to keep it buoyant, no gimmicks required. Unlike many other aquarium floaters, it skips the long, trailing root systems draping into the water column, instead rapidly forming dense, compact mats across the surface. That makes it ideal for low-tech tanks and paludariums, where the natural shade it creates helps keep nuisance algae in check while giving your livestock a peaceful canopy to live under.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Hooded leaves with air pouches create a three-dimensional texture across the water surface.
  • Short, compact root structure provides a sleek look that will not entangle taller background stems or snag swimming fish.
  • Absorbs excess nitrates and waterborne nutrients to help starve out algae.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Gently place the plants directly onto the water surface, ensuring the tops of the leaves remain dry.
  • Keep surface agitation minimal, as heavy water flow or splashing filters will trap water on top of the leaves and cause them to rot.
  • Provide adequate lighting to encourage rapid growth and bring out rich coloration.
  • Thin out the floating carpet regularly to ensure light still reaches your submerged midground and stem plants below.
  • Dose liquid fertilizers regularly because floating plants absorb nutrients directly from the water column at an accelerated rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I keep my floating aquarium plants from dying due to filter flow and splashing?

High water turbulence and constant water resting on the leaves are the main causes of rot in floating aquarium plants. Keep surface flow low, or use an airline tubing loop or floating ring to shield your aquarium floaters from direct filter return or bubbling air stones.

2. Can floating plants help control algae and absorb nitrates in a fish tank?

Yes, these aquarium floaters act as incredible biological filters. Because they sit at the surface with direct access to atmospheric carbon dioxide, they grow exponentially faster than fully submerged species, aggressively consuming nitrates, ammonium, and excess nutrients that fuel nuisance algae.

3. Should I trim the hanging roots or thin out excess surface growth?

Unlike other floaters, Salvinia Cucullata maintains naturally short roots that rarely require trimming. However, routinely thinning out excess leaf coverage is crucial so that your floating plants do not completely block light from reaching your submerged stem and ground plants below.

Great plant, did well in shipping

"Nice size clump of this arrived. Overall it handled shopping well and has been putting off new growth since I got it!"

— Kit (5/5)

"Still hanging in there. It's been About 8 days and it’s still floating around. I actually have a aggressive bubbler right in the middle of my small tank and it doesn't seem the least bit concerned. Bought to Provide a little extra shade for the other plants at the bottom and algae control. It Seems to be doing the job. Just wandering about the coloring. When it came in it was half reddish brown. I am hoping it continues to hold it’s own"

"The roots were very dark brown and the leave edges were reddish brown when arrived, could just be from shipping. Trimmed the roots and leaves and i’ll see how it turns out."

My first buceplant order & definitely not the last

"Being so new to the hobby and this being my first ever order from buceplant I had no idea what to expect, but somehow these guys surpassed my expectations anyway. -Delivery was surprisingly fast. -Some of the salvinia was yellow, brown, and melting upon arrival, but even after removing that portion I still had plenty to work with for my 5 gallon tank. -Very cool looking plant, unique leaf and root structure that I think my betta will love. -It's only been a few days and I still have tons of learning to do, so we'll see how things go in the long run. All I know for sure is that I'm hooked to this accidental newfound hobby and I'll be ordering lots more from buceplant down the line."

Delivered healthy

"Plant came alive and with healthy roots. Previous orders I have made with other vendors were dying and the roots were dry."

— Marshall P. (5/5)

Seems to be hard to kill

"When they arrived half of the plants were very brown and left a scum across the surface of the tank when I placed them. After week or so I cut each of the plants in half and tossed the most deteriorated part. I am not sure if the heat got them or what. I think it was in the upper 70s when it was shipped, but who knows what the shipping route was like. I did not help by having an air stone that was creating a mist on the plants and that is now removed. Even with my mistake new growth is occurring. This new growth was with 4 hours of light per day as I was fighting some algae. I cannot wait to see how it turns out when treating this plant right. Between what I assume was shipping damage and my handy work I would say this is hard to kill. I am a novice as this was among my first surface plants."

Received my order of plants

"Received my order of plants and it was very hot, as if it were setting in the sun. I immediately put them in the cool water to no avail. They didn’t survive."

— Stanley R. (1/5)

Super cool floater :)

"Ordered just 1 batch and got 8 good little quarter size or larger clumps. Some melted brown leaves in the bag but over all 80% look green and very healthy. Shipping was about 4 days with basic shipping costs. I added the extra thermal layer and I felt it's worth it for temperature and box support. Thanks much!"

"Beautiful-arrived healthy. Doing great"

Floating plant

"My betta loves swimming through the roots. He also rests between the leaves of the plant. The roots hang low and look really great in the tank. They make the tank look more natural and provide great hiding and resting spots for my betta. These plants arrived a little beat up looking compared to the other types I ordered from Buce. I ordered 4 and 1 may not make it (it looks like it’s dying after one week). I love the plant just wish these were in as good condition as the others in my order."

Q&A

I have read that Salvinia Cucullata needs added fertilizer to thrive. What do you recommend? I do not have any other living things in the water with the Salvinia.
Hi Roberta, Thank you for reaching out to us! We recommend using an all in one liquid fertilizer. Liquid fertilizers will stay in the water column, allowing the plants to absorb the fertilizer. Feel free to contact us at support@buceplanthelp.zendesk.com for any questions or concerns. We are always happy to help! Best regards, Buceplant Team
How big will the SALVINIA CUCULLATA get? Do they carpet themselves out or should I order a few of them to carpet myself? Thank you!
Hi Reeves, Thank you for reaching out to us. Salvinia Cucullata does grow as a matt on the surface of the water. Pieces can be cut or ripped apart to control size and amount. Each leaf can range from 1-3cm depending on growing conditions. Please do not hesitate to contact us at support@buceplanthelp.zendesk.com for any additional questions or concerns. We are always happy to help! Best Regards, Buceplant Team
What size portion is shipped in an order?
Depending on the plant size, you can receive 1 very large piece or a few smaller pieces!
