Plant Profile

Buce ‘Brownie Phantom’ is a beginner-friendly, low-tech aquarium plant featuring naturally miniature, oblong leaves that range in color from dark olive to deep brown. This variety is highly prized for its pronounced iridescent coloration and distinct blue sheen, which becomes most visible when placed under high-quality LED lighting. As an epiphytic plant, it is highly versatile and can be grown submerged or emersed, usually attached to hardscape such as driftwood or rocks rather than being buried in traditional aquarium substrate. This gives you tons of creative freedom, letting you tuck it into nooks or perch it on branches in your planted tank.

Key Features & Notes

  • Under stable conditions and proper lighting, the small leaves develop a captivating blue metallic shimmer that is highly sought after by collectors.
  • Its tiny leaf profile makes it perfect for adding intricate detail to small rocks or creating a sense of scale in nano setups.
  • This is one of the most durable species in the hobby and thrives in shaded areas. It is an ideal choice for planted tanks where other plants might struggle.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Bucephalandra is an epiphytic plant that should be attached to rocks or driftwood using aquarium-safe glue or thread; never bury the horizontal rhizome in substrate, as this will cause the plant to rot and melt.
  • Avoid making drastic changes to your water parameters or lighting because unstable conditions are the primary cause of leaf melt in new specimens.
  • While this plant is hardy and low-maintenance in standard low-light aquarium plant setups, CO2 injection and regular liquid fertilizing will yield much faster growth and richer iridescence.
  • Final size and coloration depend entirely on your specific aquarium conditions; please note that photos are a representation, and individual plants may vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why is my Bucephalandra melting?

Bucephalandra melt can occur after changes in water chemistry, temperature, or lighting. If the rhizome remains firm, keep it attached to hardscape while the plant acclimates and produces new submerged growth.

2. Can I plant Bucephalandra in substrate?

Bucephalandra is an epiphyte, so never bury its rhizome in substrate. Attach it to driftwood or rocks, or wedge the roots into hardscape while keeping the rhizome exposed.

3. Is Bucephalandra ‘Brownie Phantom’ beginner-friendly?

Yes. Bucephalandra ‘Brownie Phantom’ is a beginner-friendly, low-light aquarium plant that grows without specialized substrate or pressurized CO₂, making it well-suited for low-tech planted aquariums.

Highly recommend

"Man, I spend more time looking at this plant than my fish. It's grown in beautifully and the new leaves are stunning -- deep iridescent blue (almost purple) green with tiny white flecks. I got a large portion that I was able to divide into three sizable chunks. They're all doing amazing. I would 100% order again."

Q&A

Is this particular plant grown emersed or submersed? And are they pest free?
Hi Rain, Thank you for your question. The Bucephalandra Brownie is grown emersed. As we do not treat the plants to prevent introducing chemicals into our customer's tanks, it is possible that a snail egg might make it through our quality check and a snail may eventually end up in a tank. For this reason, we always recommend a quarantine. Please reach out our team at support@buceplant.com with additional questions. Best regards, Team Buce Plant
