Plant Profile

Rorippa Aquatica, aka Water Cabbage, is a unique and captivating aquatic plant. Belonging to the mustard family (Brassicaceae), this undemanding plant features highly variable, bright green leaves that change shape depending on water flow, lighting, and temperature, ranging from deeply lobed, oak-like foliage to smooth, rounded leaves. Compact in stature, it provides a distinctive, cabbage-like visual texture that serves as a foreground accent or midground highlight in planted aquariums, paludariums, and cool-water setups.

*Form Notice: Photos display this plant in both its emersed (above-water) and submerged forms. Depending on nursery availability and seasonality, you may receive this plant in either form. Learn more about what to expect by reading our guide on Emersed vs. Submerged-Grown Aquatic Plants.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Distinctive variable leaf shapes create a unique oak-like or cabbage-like texture.
  • Hardy and adaptable across a wide range of water temperatures and parameters.
  • Compact growth habit makes it ideal for nano aquariums, foreground groups, and midground transitions.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Remove lead weight and remove cotton wrap (or foam) surrounding the base, then strip lower foliage so bare stems anchor cleanly into soil without rotting.
  • Use fine-tip pinsettes to push individual stems 1 to 2 inches into substrate, spacing them slightly apart so light reaches lower leaves.
  • Provide moderate-to-high lighting and cooler water conditions; while CO2 is not strictly required, supplying pressurized CO2 and regular fertilization encourages faster growth.
  • Maintain stable water parameters to prevent leaf melting during the transition period.
  • To propagate, cut main stems or mature side shoots and replant them directly into the substrate; individual healthy leaves can also develop adventitious plantlets along their edges. Read our trimming & propagation guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are the leaves on my Rorippa Aquatica changing shape?

Rorippa Aquatica is heterophyllous, meaning its leaf structure varies based on environmental conditions. High lighting, strong CO2, and moderate currents produce deeply lobed, laciniate leaves, while lower lighting results in smoother, broader foliage.

2. Can Rorippa Aquatica be propagated from leaves?

Yes! In addition to traditional stem cuttings, Rorippa Aquatica can produce adventitious plantlets directly from detached or mature leaves left floating in the aquarium.

3. Does Rorippa Aquatica require CO2 injection?

No, Rorippa Aquatica is an easy-care plant that grows well in low-tech setups without CO2 injection. However, supplying CO2 and nutrient-rich soil results in faster growth and much more intricate foliage patterns.
