Product Overview

Ultum Nature Systems Controsand offers a versatile lineup of natural decorative sands and gravels designed to give any planted tank or freshwater aquarium a finished, professional look. Tahoe is a rounded pebble aquarium gravel featuring a versatile neutral color palette dominated by warm cream hues mixed with rich earthy tones. That neutral warmth pairs especially well against darker hardscape or deep green foliage, though it blends just as seamlessly into an all-light-colored scape for hobbyists sticking to a brighter theme. Measuring between 3mm and 5mm, this adaptable substrate works beautifully on its own, mixed with finer cosmetic sand like UNS Controsand Bora, or scattered along hardscape bases for custom riverbed texture.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Smooth, rounded pebble composition protects sensitive barbels, dwarf shrimp, and bottom-dwelling species during foraging.
  • Warm cream and earth-tone palette adds bright, naturalistic contrast against dark stones, wood, and vibrant aquatic plants.
  • Versatile 3mm to 5mm granule sizing blends effortlessly with fine sands to build custom stream beds and transition zones.
  • Natural decorative geological composition suitable for aquariums, paludariums, and terrestrial displays.

Usage & Application Guidelines

  • Rinse the gravel gently with clean tap water before installation to clear fine dust particles from transit.
  • Distribute the granules across foreground areas, hardscape borders, or detail pathways to build riverbed textures.
  • Pour water gently over a plate or plastic barrier during filling to avoid disturbing your hardscape arrangement.
  • Pair with root tabs or layer over aquarium soil when planting heavy root-feeding species in gravel zones.
  • Note that Tahoe gravel contains natural minerals that may slightly increase water hardness parameters.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need to rinse this aquarium substrate before adding it to my tank?

Yes, giving Controsand Tahoe a quick rinse in clean tap water before placing it in your aquarium is recommended to remove loose dust from transit and ensure immediate water clarity.

2. How much substrate do I need for my aquarium size?

For foreground pathways or focal accenting, a single 3-liter bag covers most tanks up to 9 gallons. For full bed coverage or larger setups up to 20 gallons, an 8-liter bag provides plenty of volume to build depth.

3. Can I combine UNS Controsand Tahoe with aquarium sand in the same aquascape?

Yes, combining decorative pebble gravel with aquarium soil or fine cosmetic aquarium sand is a popular technique for high-impact aquascaping layouts. You can place aquarium soil in the rear or planting pockets for root growth and use Tahoe gravel along hardscape borders or pathways for striking visual contrast.

"Would have gave 5 stars as they have quality products but they have no customer service. I updated my billing address didn’t see shipping until got confirmation number. I immediately emailed and continued to follow up for days as FedEx requires the shipper to change. Never got a hold of anyone they still haven’t responded over four days. Fortunately my old address is only an hour away and my aunt got the plants off the porch. We live in Florida so had the plants been left on porch over a few hours they would have died. Excellent quality products cannot say enough good things but can’t reach anyone via email and that’s the only option to reach out."

Q&A

I'm buying for a 7.5 gallon tank - how much gravel would I need?
Hey Mina, this depends on how thick you would like the gravel layer to be. To calculate how many liters you need, use the following equation: Length x Width x Desired Substrate Height (in inches) Divided by 60 = Liters of substrate needed
