Known for its gnarled, sandblasted appearance and thick, twisting knots, Grape Wood offers a bold and rugged alternative to more delicate varieties of aquarium wood like Manzanita. While it is frequently featured in high-end floral crafts, it has become a staple for enthusiasts building a driftwood aquarium because it anchors a layout with immediate visual weight and "old-growth" character.

Product Features and Benefits

  • Unique Knotted Texture: Unlike the thin branches of Spiderwood, Grape Wood features deep, swirling grain and thick "trunk-like" sections that provide a massive amount of surface area for moss and epiphytes.
  • Lightweight but Bold: Arriving in a light, sandy tone, this aquarium wood offers a bright contrast against dark substrates. Like a well-aged wine, it will naturally darken into a rich, vibrant brown once submerged.
  • Aquatic & Terrestrial Versatility: Grape Wood is an exceptional choice for terrariums and paludariums, providing sturdy climbing structures for reptiles or a base for air plants and bromeliads.

Preparation and Care
Driftwood is a natural product and requires a bit of prep before it’s ready for prime time.

  1. Rinse: Thoroughly rinse the piece to remove any dust or debris from transit.
  2. The Buoyancy Challenge: Grape Wood is highly buoyant and requires a substantial amount of time to become fully waterlogged. We recommend soaking it for several weeks prior to use or using heavy stones to anchor it in your aquarium securely.
  3. The "White Film" Phase: It is very common for Grape Wood to produce a harmless white biofilm during its first few weeks underwater. This is a natural reaction and is not harmful to livestock; shrimp and snails actually love to snack on it. You can easily siphon it out or scrub it off with a brush if desired.
  4. Tannin Release: Like all natural aquarium driftwood, Grape Wood will release tannins. This is a natural occurrence, and the effects will subside over time. If you prefer crystal-clear water, a 1–2 hour boil is the best way to fast-track the process. You can also reduce this effect through consistent water changes or through the addition of Aquario Neo Carbon Bag

Important note: We recommend rinsing wood thoroughly before adding it to an established aquarium. If you prefer, you may also boil the wood for at least 1–2 hours to help release tannins.
