Plant Profile
Common Name: Bucephalandra Brownie Blue
Buce ‘Brownie Blue’ is a beginner-friendly, low-tech aquarium plant featuring oblong leaves with elegantly wavy edges that develop a lovely blueish hue when grown underwater. This variety exhibits its most distinct metallic coloration under proper care and high-quality LED lighting, making it a superb choice for nano tanks. As an epiphytic plant, it is highly versatile and can be grown submerged or emersed, usually attached to hardscape such as driftwood or rocks rather than being buried in traditional aquarium substrate. It is a delicate and sophisticated accent for freshwater aquascapes, slowly sprouting from thin rhizomes to create a dense, shimmering colony over time.
Key Features & Notes
- Under stable conditions and proper lighting, the submerged leaves develop a sought-after blue iridescence that adds a "jewel-like" quality to your tank.
- Its small leaf size makes it perfect for adding detail to small rocks or creating a sense of scale in larger professional layouts.
- This is one of the most durable species in the hobby and thrives in shaded areas. It is an ideal choice for planted tanks where other plants might struggle.
- It is perfectly at home fully submerged in an aquarium or emersed in a humid terrarium. This flexibility makes it a favorite for diverse planted tanks.
Care Tips & Preparation
- Bucephalandra is an epiphytic plant that should be attached to rocks or driftwood. Never bury the rhizome in substrate, as this will cause the plant to rot and melt.
- Carefully remove the plant from its pot and clear away all rockwool from the roots. For a deep dive on prepping potted plants, click here.
- Avoid making drastic changes to your water parameters or lighting. Unstable conditions are the primary cause of leaf melt in new specimens.
- While this plant is hardy and low-maintenance, CO2 injection will yield much faster growth. We recommend researching your specific water chemistry to ensure your plant thrives.
- Final size and coloration depend entirely on your specific aquarium conditions. Please note that photos are a representation, and individual plants may vary.
- Please research appropriately to ensure your plant thrives.

Plants great, culture not so much
"The potted plants and driftwood with Java fern are awesome. Virtually plug & play in any aquarium. Disappointed with the tissue culture Bucephalandra because it mostly fell apart right out of the gel medium. That was a bummer but all the rest was good."
Healthy, nice color
"Came with 4 rhizomes. All are doing great. The color came darker than in the pictures, and is more of a deep green to slightly purple color gradient."
Looks great with no melt
"Another good healthy plant."
Some holes in leaves but
"Some holes in leaves but plenty of good ones to make it a non issue."
Great Health and Full
"Looks exactly like the pictures. The name "Brownie" is a bit misleading for someone who doesn't know much about Bucephalandra. It is a larger variety of Buce with deep green leaves and a "brown" like stem. It came in perfect condition and will be buying more for a 125 scape I plan on doing. Thank you!"
