Common Name: Fanwort, Giant Cabomba

Cabomba Aquatica is one of the most popular types of Cabomba available in the aquarium trade.   It is an easy stem plant, suitable for beginners compared to some other harder to keep Cabomba types.  It works great as a background or midground coverage when planted in dense clusters and can grow into a thick bush of delicate green leaves. 

This plant can be great for beginners because it is hardy and does not require CO2 injection. It does prefer a nutrient-rich environment and clean water. Cabomba requires moderate light or the lower parts of the stems can start to turn yellow and die off. It is propagated through cuttings that easily take root in the substrate. Cabomba can be grown submersed or emersed.  

Notes:

  • Do not make drastic changes to the aquarium. Unstable parameters will result in melt and rotting of the aquarium plant.

"This plant has a unique look and can be kept in a lot of different conditions, I have had it in many tanks, usually like to use a weight to keep it down because it will likely grow and become to buoyant for the lacking root system to keep it down for the first month or so. once it gets roots established it has new growth daily and can add a nice "bubbly" look to the tank if trimmed properly"

Cabomba failed

"Thought I would try the plant for the price, as youtube planted tank owners said how incredible the plant was for shrimp. Well, after seeing some poor reviews, I was hesitant, but ordered it anyway. Plant came in smelling foul and mostly melted. I soaked it in fish water from tank to rinse dead smell off and planted. All melted and died, except 1 stem. And made a huge mess of the aquarium because of the feather fronds of the plant. I think if one can get it established in the tank would be nice plant to have though?"
