Plant Profile

Cryptocoryne Balansae 'Pink' is a rare color variant of the classic Cryptocoryne Balansae, prized for its long, narrow leaves and distinctive pink to rosy-bronze coloration. Unlike Cryptocoryne Pink Flamingo, which is a completely different Cryptocoryne cultivar, Pink Balansae retains the characteristic elongated, heavily textured leaves associated with Balansae.

Its tall, flowing growth makes it an excellent midground to background plant, where its wavy leaves add height and movement without requiring frequent trimming. It is a relatively slow-growing Cryptocoryne and can adapt to a range of aquarium conditions once established.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Pink to rosy-bronze tones while retaining the classic Balansae appearance
  • Produces narrow, heavily textured leaves that add movement and height to an aquascape
  • Low-tech friendly: Can grow without CO2, though supplementation can encourage stronger growth and coloration.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Thoroughly wash away or soak off the nutrient gel from the roots with your fingers before dividing and planting.
  • Plant Cryptocoryne Balansae 'Pink' directly into the substrate, making sure the roots are buried while keeping the crown of the plant above the substrate.
  • Provide consistent water parameters and low to moderate lighting while the plant establishes. Combining higher lighting and CO2 will encourage faster growth and brighter pink coloration.
  • Avoid frequently uprooting or moving the plant after planting, as Cryptocorynes can take time to establish and may experience “Crypt melt” when introduced to a new environment.
  • Feed the roots with nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs to encourage strong root development and healthy new growth.
  • Allow the plant to grow naturally without frequent trimming. Remove older or damaged leaves at the base as needed to keep the plant looking healthy.
  • Propagate established plants by separating daughter plants that develop from runners and replanting them individually.
  • Learn how to prevent Cryptocoryne melt to help your new Cryptocoryne acclimate successfully and establish healthy new growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I trim the leaves if Cryptocoryne Balansae 'Pink' gets too large?

Yes. Individual leaves that become too long or damaged can be removed at the base. Avoid cutting the leaves halfway down, as this leaves an unnatural-looking edge and the damaged portion will not regrow.

2. Will Crypt Balansae 'Pink' spread across the aquarium?

It is not considered a rapid-spreading plant. New plants may develop around the mother plant over time, but it generally remains more controlled than fast-running Cryptocoryne species.

3. Will Cryptocoryne Balansae 'Pink' stay pink?

Its coloration can vary depending on growing conditions. New growth may emerge with pink tones that can become more subdued as the leaves mature. A combination of high light and CO2 is recommended to achieve the most vibrant coloration.
