Plant Profile

Delivering the spotted patterning of the classic Ozelot Sword in a slender, refined silhouette, Echinodorus 'Ozelot Narrow Mini' is a fantastic cultivar designed for compact, detailed aquascapes. Featuring narrower, lanceolate leaf blades compared to standard Ozelot varieties, this dwarf hybrid produces slender green leaves heavily speckled with dark reddish-brown to maroon spots across new growth. Maxing out around 12 inches tall, its restrained height and narrow foliage make it an ideal midground centerpiece in medium setups or a prominent background feature in nano aquariums.

Key Features & Notes

  • Slender, narrow-leaf form of the popular Ozelot Sword with dark reddish-brown spotted markings.
  • Compact scale fits comfortably into midground zones or small tank layouts.
  • Hardy and adaptable rosette species that provides striking pattern contrast without demanding delicate care.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Prep the plant by removing it from the pot and clearing all rockwool from the roots.
  • Plant the roots deeply into your aquarium soil, keeping the central crown resting just above the substrate line to prevent rot.
  • All Echinodorus are heavy root feeders that rely on rich substrate nutrition; placing root tabs near the base supports steady, healthy leaf development.
  • Supplemental CO2 injection accelerates growth and encourages denser, fuller foliage, though the plant will still grow steadily in low-tech setups.
  • Maintain stable water parameters to prevent leaf shedding during the initial transition period.
  • Sword plants propagate through side shoots off of their leaves, which can be trimmed and replanted into the substrate. To control the size of your sword plant, you can remove the side shoots and older leaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does 'Ozelot Narrow Mini' differ from standard Ozelot Swords?

While standard Ozelot Swords produce wide, oval leaf blades that can easily reach 16–20+ inches, the 'Narrow Mini' variant features noticeably slimmer, lanceolate leaves and stays much shorter, making it vastly better suited for midground placement.

2. How do I maintain crisp dark spots on Echinodorus 'Ozelot Narrow Mini'?

Provide moderate-to-high lighting directly over the plant and ensure the root zone receives ample iron supplementation via quality aquasoil or root tabs. Higher light levels help sharpen the contrast of the reddish-brown spots against the green leaf blades.

3. Can Echinodorus 'Ozelot Narrow Mini' grow in low-tech aquariums without CO2?

Yes, it adapts easily to low-tech setups without pressurized CO2. Supplying a nutrient-dense substrate or inserting regular root tabs near the root crown, alongside decent lighting, is all it needs to maintain healthy growth and speckled leaves.

Melted, likely DOA

"Already got the DOA claim fulfilled on this one, it reacted so quickly to just being stuffed into a box that by the time it got here about 60 hours of shipping later, it was effectively yellow for the most part. Three plants had maybe one leaf salvageable, and the three others with zero leaves salvageable are already looking grim. Just gave the likely survivors some Tab1 and FE as close to the roots as I could imagine, hoping that helps (artificial sand, should have some tabs spread but I'm not taking chances they can't reach them). Currently one week in."

Great Plants, Arrived mostly Healthy

"I ordered 13 plants, the echinodorus ocelot narrow mini being one of them. Everything i had received was in excellent condition except for one. This plant had its leave fallen off and we're mush within the bag, the stem/roots were intact so Im planting it and hoping for the best. The buceplant support was very helpful, I sent pictures of the plant and was offered compensation for the plant without any questions. I would highly recommend using buceplant, especially if you are scared about plants arriving dead and then losing your money, since the support was very good."
