Plant Profile

Helanthium 'Vesuvius' gets its name from the explosive, corkscrew-like twist of its leaves. A unique cultivar derived from Helanthium angustifolium, it produces slender, bright green leaves that curl and spiral upward as they grow. Maxing out around 16 inches tall, its tightly twisted ribbon foliage brings dynamic vertical motion to the background or midground without blocking out light like broad-leaved plants. It spreads efficiently by sending runner chains through the substrate, forming dense, swirling thickets that add instant personality to any layout.

Key Features & Notes

  • Tightly twisted corkscrew leaves add dynamic vertical structure to background zones.
  • Hardy rosette plant that adapts easily to low-tech setups without requiring CO2.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Prep the plant by removing it from the pot and clearing all rockwool from the roots.
  • Plant individual crowns deep into your aquarium soil using fine-tipped tweezers, keeping the central crown resting just above the substrate line.
  • Provide low to moderate lighting; higher light levels and CO2 injection encourage tighter, more pronounced leaf spirals.
  • Maintain stable water parameters to prevent leaf melting during the initial transition period.
  • Trim spreading runner shoots with sharp aquascaping scissors to control its footprint or replant plantlets elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are the leaves on Helanthium 'Vesuvius' curled like corkscrews?

That spiral shape is the signature trait of the 'Vesuvius' cultivar. The unique growth mutation causes the long, thin leaf blades to twist continuously as they reach upward toward the light.

2. How does Helanthium 'Vesuvius' spread across the tank?

It spreads by sending out underground runner chains. New baby plantlets pop up along the runner lines every few inches, gradually filling out into a dense curtain of curly leaves.

3. Can Helanthium 'Vesuvius' grow in low-tech aquariums without CO2?

Yes, it grows well in low-tech tanks without pressurized CO2. Giving it a nutrient-dense soil or adding regular root tabs will keep it putting out new spiraled leaves.

Healthy and beautiful

"Received my Vesuvius swords, healthy, happy beautiful plants. Looking forward to waiving them grow and spread in my large tank as a ground cover."

— Amanda S. (5/5)

Sadly 75% damaged due to poor packing

"Unfortunately, instead of receiving several healthy mini-plants in 1 pot, i received a plant with 3/4 of the stems broken due to poor packing. My heat pack was left completely loose in a box that was too large for what I ordered. Sadly, this is the 2nd shipment in a row that I had this experience. The team needs to be better trained on how to properly pack plants to protect the plants and their client’s investment. I work retail and pack things all the time. This is not a good best practice. I always love Buce, but this best practice is a no-go for me. I will only order plants from here during warm weather going forward."

— Lynn G. (2/5)

all my plants came in

"all my plants came in dead"

— Isaiah N. (1/5)

These plants had heathy roots

"These plants had heathy roots and crowns how ever they were closer to the outer part of the packaging so they did have some leaves damaged by temperature even with insulation and heat pack. I however am positive they will rebound once they settle in."
