Plant Profile

Common Names: Java Moss, Vesicularia Dubyana

Java Moss is moss-tly famous for being the undisputed heavyweight moss of the aquarium hobby, and it has earned its reputation for a good reason. This legendary staple has earned its residency in the hobby because it can survive almost any water parameter or temperature swing you throw its way. Its deep green, thin, interlocking fronds grow in a wild, free-form pattern that is excellent for softening hard landscape lines or creating a natural, aged look on wood and rocks.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Draping or placing this moss near hardscape elements gives driftwood and stones a mature, weathered look that mimics wild riverbeds.
  • The chaotic, interlocking network of fine fronds creates a safe foraging ground and a secure hiding space for delicate shrimp and vulnerable newborn fish fry.

Care & Planting Instructions

  • Place the moss directly onto your substrate, or tie/glue it to rocks and driftwood branches.
  • Keep your water parameters relatively stable; while Java Moss is highly resilient, sudden and extreme water chemistry shifts can cause the fronds to melt.
  • Trim the moss canopy occasionally with sharp aquascaping shears to keep it clean, compact, and to encourage even bushier new growth.
  • Provide clean weekly water changes and low to medium lighting; adding carbon dioxide is not required, but it will help the moss grow faster and show off a richer green color.
  • Propagate your layout by simply cutting or pulling apart small clumps of new growth and attaching them to new surfaces throughout the tank.
