Common Name: Java Fern, Microsorum Pteropus, Leptochilus pteropus

Java fern is one of the most popular aquarium plants in the hobby due to its beauty and easy care. They can grow in low light conditions and a wide range of water parameters. The mini version is perfect for any tank size due to their smaller leaves. The plant can be attached directly onto driftwood, rocks or any aquarium decoration using thread or glue. Make sure to keep the rhizomes above your substrate or the plant can begin to rot. Propagation is easy and straightforward; simply cut or pull apart rhizomes to be replanted. 

Notes:

  • Java Fern is an epiphytic aquarium plant. This means Java Fern is grown best attached to wood, rock, or sitting on top of substrate
  • Java Fern will propagate through its leaves. Dots on the underside of its leaves are normal and not a cause for concern.
  • Do not make drastic changes to the aquarium. Unstable parameters will result in melt and rotting of the aquarium plant.
  • Burying the rhizome will cause the plant to die
  • CO2 injection will yield better growth.
  • Please research appropriately to ensure your plant thrives.

    Bunched with little rhizome to use.

    "The Java Fern and Anubias were easily the two best shipped, but then again, they're slow growers and probably slow witted too. While some other plants were having a stroke under the apparent darkness, these and their Anubias buddies were just chilling with sunglasses on. They came bunched up, but I was expecting more rhizome. Some of the cuttings didn't even have a rhizome, so I'll just leave them floating to create plantlets. Even as is, they still make a nice and wild canopy with all the individual leaves either floating or half floating about."

    Q&A

    Do I have to worry about these plants introducing disease into my oranda tank? Should these plants be quarantined? Is there a safe way to ‘clean’ them or dip them before putting them in the aquarium?
    Hi Clare, Thank you for your question! We do have a Quality Assurance check on every plant before it is shipped. As we do not treat the plants to prevent introducing chemicals into our customer's tanks, it is possible that a snail egg might make it through our QA check and a snail may eventually end up in a tank.     What is there full grown height?

    can you just let it float free?
