This African hardwood is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the aquascaping world. Famous for its extreme density and a striking, two‑toned contrast of sandy tan and deep chocolate brown, Mopani looks less like a piece of timber and more like a rugged, ancient relic sculpted by the elements. If you want a hardscape that brings an immediate sense of weight, permanence, and prehistoric history to your layout, this is truly the wood that knocks out the competition.

Product Features and Benefits

  • Unlike almost any other driftwood, Mopani is so dense that it typically sinks immediately. This makes it a go-to for hobbyists who want to skip the "weighing it down" phase and get straight to aquascaping.
  • Mopani has a unique, contrasting color palette with light tan highlights and deep chocolate-brown shadows. Its smooth areas paired with gnarled, "knotty" textures add instant depth to a driftwood aquarium.
  • Because it is exceptionally hard, Mopani breaks down much more slowly than other woods. It provides a long-lasting foundation for a planted aquarium hardscape, especially when used as a base for mosses and ferns.
  • Its durability and striking look make it just as popular for reptile enclosures and terrariums, providing a sturdy, non-rot surface for climbing and basking.

Preparation and Care
A little extra prep goes a long way in maintaining its stunning appearance.

  1. Rinse: Thoroughly rinse the piece to remove any dust or debris from transit.
  2. The Tannin Powerhouse: Mopani is very rich in natural tannins. While these are beneficial for the health of your fish and help naturally lower pH, they will produce a dark "tea-colored" tint. If you prefer crystal-clear water, we strongly recommend boiling the wood for 1–2 hours or soaking it in a bucket for several days before use. You can also reduce this effect through consistent water changes or through the addition of Aquario Neo Carbon Bag

Important note: We recommend rinsing wood thoroughly before adding it to an established aquarium. If you prefer, you may also boil the wood for at least 1–2 hours to help release tannins.
