Plant Profile

Micranthemum ‘Monte Carlo’ is the ultimate aquatic carpeting plant to give your aquarium that lush, velvety rolling-hill look you’ve been dreaming of. With its tiny, round leaves and bright green color, it pops beautifully against neutral substrates. If you’ve ever struggled to grow notoriously finicky Dwarf Baby Tears (HC), Monte Carlo is the friendlier, more forgiving alternative you’ve been looking for. It spreads out into a thick, uniform mat, giving you maximum aquascaping rewards without the heartbreak.

Tissue Culture cups ensure your aquascape gets a super clean starting point. Lab‑grown and fully sterile, it arrives without pests, snails, duckweed, or any unwanted algae. It’s the go‑to option for anyone who wants peace of mind when adding fresh greenery to a carefully maintained setup.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Forms a tight, velvety foreground lawn with small, bright green leaves that add an incredible sense of scale and depth to your aquascape.
  • Far easier to cultivate than Dwarf Baby Tears, making it an accessible carpet option for hobbyists of all experience levels.

Care & Planting Instructions

  •  Thoroughly wash away the nutrient gel from the roots with your fingers before parting it out into manageable portions and planting.
  • Use a dry start method or Wabi Kusa setup to give its root system plenty of time to firmly anchor into the substrate before you flood the tank.
  • Maintain stable aquarium parameters and avoid drastic shifts in water quality to prevent your new grass from melting.
  • Provide medium to high lighting and inject pressurized CO2 to supercharge its density and growth rate, keeping it low and compact.
  • Master the basics by learning how to properly grow aquarium carpet plants to ensure your new layout fills in quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I plant Monte Carlo tissue culture?

Use fine-tip tweezers to bury each portion about halfway into nutrient-dense aquarium soil. Spacing them 1 inch apart helps them connect quickly via runners.

2. Does Monte Carlo need CO2 to form a carpet?

While Monte Carlo can technically grow in low-tech setups without CO2, adding pressurized CO2 and medium-to-high lighting is strongly recommended to force it to grow horizontally into a tight, plush carpet instead of growing tall or straggly.

3. Why is my newly planted Monte Carlo floating up?

Because tissue culture portions have delicate root systems, fish or water currents can easily dislodge them. Planting small clumps deeply into fine soil or letting the tank grow emersed using the Dry Start Method will anchor the roots securely before flooding.

Perfect for hobbyists with multiple terrains/tanks.

"Good quality as far as very few leaves and stems that are paled out or look too brown. Some of the plants because of the tissue culture method are very tiny. I love to make all sort of habitats, however, and mote carlo is amazing in terrariums! The only issue I could take with this product was that the clump was pretty knotted up when I tried separating pieces. However, there was a TON of individual stands and again, 99% healthy. TRUST BP!!"

Q&A

Is it true that Monte Carlo seagrass is able to run with no CO2 injections?
Hi Aaron, Thank you for your question. Monte Carlo can be grown without CO2 injections, but it tends to grow at a slower rate than setups with CO2 injections. You can provide moderate to high lighting to compensate for the lack of CO2. We hope this helps! Thank you, Team Buce Plant
