Skull Island

.

Skull Island is a King Kong inspired low tech aquascape which utilizes easy to grow beginner plants without the need of CO2 injection.  We wanted to show how easy it is for anyone to set up a beautiful and natural looking planted aquarium.  For the hardscape material, we chose to go with lava rock and Spiderwood.  Mini Xmas Moss was attached to the presoaked and waterlogged Spiderwood.  We used Controsoil in the back to provide some nutrients to the plants and sand in the front for aesthetics.  Anubias, Buce, and more moss attached to rocks were placed in the crevices of the Lava Rocks.  Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo', Staurogyne Repens and Hygrophilla Pinnatifida were planted along the midground and background directly into the soil.  Some of the Buce were super glued onto the rock and wood.  Initially we put a Twinstar 600E LED onto the tank but since this is a low tech tank with slow growing plants, we had to replace the lighting with a lower output fixture once algae began to grow.
